Last Chance: The Technology

It was years of fighting and killing that brought about Last Chance. Ishmael, the founder, has spent over twenty years refining his craft on all levels, and one of those is weaponry. A Temporal Warrior is not as skilled a spellcaster as the Raider or Wizard, but he makes up for it in martial knowledge. It was due to the observation of just how easily the majority of potential enemies that were hardly effected by, or could simply shrug off energy weapons without batting an eyelash; between a Burster and a Cosmo-Knight, the ever popular laser pistol is about as effective as a rolled up newspaper. The answer was a step back in time.
Projectile weapons were tried and true for over 1000 years before the coming of the Rifts and it was widely accepted at that time that they were inferior to the new and powerful energy weapons like the versatile laser pistol or powerful particle beam pistol. Projectile weapons were considered unwieldy and limited to heavy support weapons for tanks and cyborgs. The stigma has carried over to Post Rifts times because the most readily available weapons are the relatively useless S.D.C. variety that most regular folks can get their hands on. They have their place but are of no use to everyday citizens, because they are either too much or too little with no medium between a 20th century rifle and a SAMAS Railgun.
This wide open market was and still is ignored because no one wants a slug thrower when they can have a shiny new laser pistol, regardless of the pros and cons. Some military minds have gone back to projectile weapons where available (the Russian War Camps and Glitter Boys). But, buy and large, there is not a suitable projectile weapon for the mass market. Phaseworld has made attempts in the field of gravity guns but they still are not as well received as the more popular energy weapons.
The miniaturization of the standard Electro-magnetic drive for railguns has made this possibility a reality. They are still larger and heavier than comparable weapons but they more than make up for it in greater damage and versatility. These weapons are geared towards mercenaries and fighters that need a suitable weapon (heavy, sidearm, or otherwise) that is capable of damaging previously invulnerable opponents. The much feared and avoided Glitterboy can now be cut to shreds in a matter of seconds by 3 or 4 skilled soldiers with Last Chance weapons. The smaller drive system results in slower speeds (sub-sonic in most cases) but does still deliver quite a wallop.
The second innovation used by Last Chance would be the securing of Kisentite as the material of choice for their projectiles. This, in conjunction with a number of slug shapes and styles proves effective as super-hard projectiles slam into targets at astounding speeds. Kisentite, by nature, is an excellent Armor Piercing round because it is so hard, and the use of styles like Flechettes (many tiny arrows fired at once) or simple Slugs (a single, solid projectile) very effective and versatile weapons of war.
The final step in the process (more accurately, the first step) would be the design of the weapons. They are almost completely drawn from designs that have been tried and proven effective in previous centuries. For example, the Adder, Venom, and Single Grenade Launchers are all designs used previously and effectively by the year 2000, long before the coming of the Rifts. It is these designs that have culminated the precious innovations into the height of technology available to the Special Forces of earth and abroad. Included into the basic weapon designs are other special accessories that round out the versatility of these firearms. Folding and retractable stocks that turn a full sized rifle into a small arm for quick deployment, under-barrel flashlights and sights that turn shotguns into precision implements, and powerful optics that can see in any weather or light condition. This special attention paid to versatility and practicality show through in the well-crafted (80% done by hand), and well thought out designs and unparalleled performance.
